More Than Coconuts: What CRB Can Threaten on Kauaʻi

Get a Free Estimate

CRB Is Not Just a Coconut Palm Problem

Kauaʻi’s Palms and Plants Are at Risk

The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle is often associated with coconut palms, but its impact reaches far beyond coconuts. In Hawaiʻi, CRB is known to damage many palms and important food, farm, cultural, and landscape plants. Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Council notes that CRB prefers coconut, royal, date, and fan palms, but may also feed on hala, taro, banana, pineapple, and sugarcane when preferred palms are unavailable. USDA APHIS also lists crops such as bananas, sugarcane, papayas, pineapples, taro, and date palms as economically important plants affected by CRB.

Food + Cultural Plants Hala Banana Taro / Kalo Pineapple Sugarcane Papaya

This Is Bigger Than One Tree

CRB threatens more than the coconut palms we see along the coast. It can impact backyard gardens, farms, cultural plants, landscaping, food security, and the overall health of Kauaʻi’s tropical canopy.

Early treatment, prevention, and proper green waste management matter. CRB larvae breed in decomposing organic material such as mulch piles, compost, stumps, logs, green waste, manure, and sawdust piles, so unmanaged green waste can become a breeding site.

    Our Treatment Approach

    Book a Certified Arborist Inspection

Tree health issues are not one-size-fits-all. Pest pressure, tree species, size, condition, location, and environmental exposure all matter. That is why our process begins with assessment before treatment.

We evaluate visible symptoms, pest activity, tree condition, and property needs before recommending the most appropriate treatment plan. When systemic treatment is suitable, we use targeted tree injection methods designed to deliver treatment directly into the tree’s vascular system.

This approach allows us to treat with precision while reducing unnecessary exposure to the surrounding property, landscaping, people, pets, and pollinators.

    Professional Tree Injection Treatments

    ACE-jet®

Fast-Acting Support for Active Pest Pressure

ACE-jet® is commonly used when trees are experiencing active feeding damage from certain leaf-chewing or sap-feeding insects. It moves systemically through the tree, helping reduce pest activity and limit continued damage to foliage and new growth.

This treatment may be recommended when fast intervention is needed to help protect the tree from escalating insect pressure.

    IMA-jet® 10

Concentrated Protection for Larger Trees or Higher Pressure Situations

IMA-jet® 10 is a more concentrated formulation that may be used for larger trees, stronger pest pressure, or situations requiring a higher-strength systemic treatment approach.

This treatment is selected based on tree size, pest concern, and arborist assessment to ensure the application is appropriate for the specific site and tree condition.

    PHOSPHO-jet®

Plant Health & Disease Defense Support

PHOSPHO-jet® is used to support trees facing certain disease pressures and overall plant health challenges. Rather than targeting insects, it is commonly used as part of a tree health care plan focused on disease suppression, root support, and improved resilience.

This treatment may be recommended when trees show signs of stress, decline, or vulnerability to specific pathogens.

    Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Awareness

What Property Owners Should Watch For

The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle, often called CRB, is one of the most serious threats to coconut palms and other palms in Hawai‘i. Adult beetles bore into the crown of the palm and feed on the developing fronds. Over time, this damage can weaken the tree, reduce canopy health, and in severe cases, lead to palm death.

Early detection matters. Once visible damage appears, the beetle may have already been active inside the crown.

    Common Signs of CRB Damage

    V-Shaped Cuts in Palm Fronds

One of the most recognizable signs of CRB activity is a jagged, V-shaped or wedge-shaped cut pattern in the palm fronds. This happens when beetles feed on young, unopened fronds inside the crown. As those fronds open, the feeding damage becomes visible.

    Bore Holes Near the Crown

Adult beetles may leave visible entry holes around the crown or base of the fronds. These openings can be difficult to see from the ground, especially on taller palms, which is why professional inspection is helpful.

    Fibrous Debris or Frass

CRB activity may leave behind shredded, sawdust-like material known as frass. This may appear near bore holes, within the crown area, or sometimes fall to the base of the tree.

    Declining or Damaged Center Spear

Because CRB targets the growing point of the palm, the newest center spear may appear damaged, wilted, browned, or weakened. This is a serious warning sign and should be inspected quickly.

Thinning Canopy or Repeated Frond Damage

Ongoing beetle activity can cause a palm to lose vigor over time. Repeated frond damage, thinning canopy, or unusual decline may indicate that the tree needs professional assessment.

    Why Proactive Treatment Matters

CRB damage can progress quickly, especially on properties with multiple palms or high-value landscape features. For commercial properties, resorts, farms, estates, and managed landscapes, prevention and monitoring are often more effective than waiting until severe damage is visible.

A proactive tree care plan can help:

    • Protect high-value coconut palms
    • Reduce risk of repeated pest damage
    • Support long-term tree health
    • Preserve mature landscape features
    • Minimize emergency removals or costly decline
    • Maintain the beauty and safety of the property

Healthy palms are part of the landscape identity of Kaua‘i and protecting them requires early action, informed care, and ongoing attention.
